Scientific research: A development strategy for promoting international cooperation and effective coordination with reputable experts

Though newly established, Thai Nguyen University – Lao Cai Campus (TNU – LCC) possesses experienced and dedicated personnel in the field of training, scientific research and international cooperation, transferring from Thai Nguyen University as well as prestigious educational institutions in Lao Cai and other provinces. A high number of LCC officials are scientists of good repute and contributions to Vietnam’s education and scientific and technological advancement, which is a strong manpower helping promote LCC development to a higher level. Particularly, the scientific research cooperation with international partners has significantly supported teaching and learning activities in LCC.

Continuing researches of LCC staff and teachers, in 2016, the Campus has promoted scientific research and technology transfer in cooperation with international institutions such as: Research Institute for Dry Areas under Spanish National Research Council and the University of Almería – Spain in transfer of technologies mainly in the field of environmental impact assessment applying modern sensors “Using several sensors to evaluate changes in temperature and humidity of soil and air in different forest conditions affecting distribution and development of a number of valuable native species”.

Furthermore, besides cooperation with the University of Technology Sydney, Australia in the study of biodiversity and nature conservation, LCC scientists have collaborated, particularly, with Institute of Meteorology, University of Natural Sciences and Applied Sciences Vienna, Austria to carry out “Modelling influences of Climate Change on Maize Production in Thai Nguyen”. At the meeting between Thai Nguyen University and Feng Chia University, Taiwan’s scientists proposed cooperation in scientific research with TNU and LCC in specific and building an Automated Environment Monitoring Station in Lao Cai province, greatly contributing to the local practices of disaster and extreme weather event warnings.

The initiative for international cooperation in scientific research is considered as one of LCC’s top priorities in the upcoming period with a view to better strengthen the capacity of LCC’s not only personnel but the whole students.

When used in testing research, the sensor is placed under a forest canopy to record light intensity in the forest over time.

2. Devices measuring temperature and soil moisture

* Device description

- Device Name: temperature, humidity and light sensor - “Em50 Digital/Analog Data Logger”

- Composition: 04 temperature and light sensors and 01 light intensity sensor are connected to a receiver named “Data Logger”. This receiver, powered by 05 AA batteries, has the microprocessor able to record and save 36,000 measurement results. Data are entered into a computer by a com port via connection cable.

* Field measurement methods

- Setting up the device

+ 04 sensors are placed 15 – 20 cm under the ground, 1.5 – 2m far around and in connection with Data Logger by wire.

+ 01 light intensity sensor is placed at the monitoring point which is under full natural light all day, never obscured.

+ One Data Logger is attached to a steady wood stake, 1.2m above the ground and covered to protect it from water and high temperature. Data Logger has 01 microprocessor with an electronic chip, 05 ports receiving information and 01 com port connecting to a computer or handheld tracking device.

- Updating data

Data on temperature and humidity are continuously measured every 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 60 minutes, etc. according to user’s requirements. After each specific period, Data Logger will record parameters: time, temperature, humidity and light intensity from each connected sensor.

- Extracting and processing data

- Data extraction: The data are updated automatically every specific period of time. By using ECH20 Utility installed on computer and connected to com port of Data Logger, data are copied to computer in Excel file format to achieve statistical information: updating time, temperature, humidity and light intensity of each sensor.

Data processing: Collected data will be statistically analyzed by Excel Microsoft in order to easily meet research requirements for data processing. The data collected from sensors will be recorded hourly (updating and saving new data every 01 hour); subsequently, tabulating data according to time (hourly, daily, monthly or seasonally).

3. Logger iButton: A device measuring temperature and humidity

This device is used in Ba Be National Pard to record hourly temperature and humidity.
